i was reading that there is no an a low correlation between the size of the brain and the intelligence. between the 1800s and 1900s several societies had many members that donated their brains in order to see if an experiment will show if there were any correlation between the size and intelligence. as a result there were none correlation but maybe it was because of they did not have a lot of methods to study the brain or maybe there were correlating to something else. as today and MRI scans can show a possible correlation between brain size and IQ test. with the MRI we can identify different size changes in the brain, but is only in some areas that the change of size is notable and those areas are the ones with more intelligence.
You bring up good points, however, in our book it also talks about how even though women's brains are smaller than men's, intelligence probably correlates with the amount of grey matter than just pure brain size. As humans become more obese, their brain size to body size ratio will change but that won't change how smart they are obviously.
ReplyDeleteI really liked this blog post, but for some reason in the beginning I answer you on the muddiest point because I didn’t know how to post here. Before reading about the brain size and the relationship with intelligence I think that it does not matter much. In our book it states that for example even though there are some differences between male and female brains, the behavioral differences are really smaller than people might think. Now, intelligence can be better measure with the amount of gray matter in the brain than size, and after reading and thinking about this subject I truly believe that intelligence can be view from another point. For example, our own predisposition to think that we can achieve certain things or not, the social and cultural aspect is also important, here is an example that I was thinking about. In a Hispanic family parents expect women to be submissive and boys to be more aggressive and to achieve more things outside the home, this aspect alone predispose people to think that women cannot achieve as much as men do and as a result that men are more intelligent. Great post though, it got me thinking!
